We grew up with a rotary phone on the kitchen wall. You picked it up, you dialled, and for as long as that call lasted, that was the whole job of the phone. It didn’t do anything else. It couldn’t.
A few years ago, we realised we wanted to disconnect from the noise while still being connected to our connections. The concept was to bring the old design and new technology together so they actually rang and actually took calls from your mobile, without needing your phone tied to you at every hour of the day.
A true statement piece, we wanted one for our own home desk. But when we went looking for something like it here in Australia, there wasn’t anything.
That gap is where Rewound started.
Every product on this site is new. Built today, not restored, not second-hand, not a lucky find from an antique shop. The shell might look as though it’s straight out of 1974. The tech inside it is current: Bluetooth, rechargeable, tested, and built to be used every day rather than looked at once and forgotten on a shelf.
We picked physical phones first because they say the most. A phone that only rings, and only takes calls, is a small, deliberate rebellion against everything else your actual phone does to you in a day. No feed. No notifications. No reason to check it. It just rings, you answer it, and that’s the whole feature list.
From there, the rest of the range follows the same rule: genuinely functional, retro in form, and only added if we’d actually want it on our own desk.
We don’t list everything we can find. We’re not trying to be a catalogue of mass-produced goods.
Every product we add gets tested before it’s added to the collection, and most of what we look at doesn’t make the cut.
We look for something you’ll actually use, over novelty, and ensure the “vintage” look is not doing all the work while the tech underneath lets it down.
Ten to fifteen products, chosen carefully, will always beat a hundred we’re not sure about.
Honestly, it’s for people like me. People who remember what these things used to feel like – the weight of a handset, the sound a dial makes, the simplicity of honest communication with our loved ones – and for those who want one genuine, well-made version of that on their desk or their shelf.
That was the plan, anyway. What I didn’t expect was how much of it would end up being shared. My kids had never seen a rotary phone in their lives (or any kind of landline phone for that matter), and the first thing that happened when one arrived in our house was a queue and many, many questions.
So it’s for people who remember. It’s also, apparently, for the people they live with who also want to relish in the nostalgia.
Rewound is based in Melbourne. We ship Australia wide, and we’re a small, hands-on operation — which means when you need something, you’re not stuck in a chatbot queue. You’re talking to someone who actually knows the products and genuinely believes in the joy and function they can bring to our lives.
Our small team also means if you’ve got product suggestions, or fancy writing something for The Archive, we’re here for that too.
We’re just getting started. The range will grow carefully, the same way it started — one product at a time, tested properly, added because it earns its place.
